Anatomy of Network Threats
An open IP architecture presents many threats from many sources to all parts of the network. This is an overview of some common threats, their sources, and components of the network that could be affected. There are many types of security threats and they continue to grow, develop, and mutate over a period of time.
A high level distribution of network security threats is common, and a brief description of security threats is given in this article. This is not meant to be an exhaustive description of network threats, but rather an overview.
A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make the computer resource unavailable to its users. Perpetrators of DDoS attacks typically target sites or IT services hosted on high-profile Web servers such as banks, credit card payment companies, and even DNS root servers.
A common method of attack involves saturating the target machine with external communications requests such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly that it is rendered unavailable. In general terms, DDoS attacks are implemented by forcing the targeted network elements or servers to reset, consuming their IT resources so that they can no longer provide their intended service, or obstructing the communication media.
The result is that users can no longer communicate adequately. Bots and Botnets Bots are computer programs that secretly install themselves on machines and run in the background, hidden from view of users, IT administrators, and even the operating system.
A botnet is a group of bots that can propagate across the Internet and can be externally controlled by a malicious hacker or criminal. Once they install themselves on machines, they scan for vulnerabilities and collect information like passwords and user names. The bots in a botnet communicate with each other and the central controller to steal information, try to exploit system weaknesses, send spam, and execute DDoS attacks.

Five Steps towards Disaster Recovery
1. Understand what data and systems are critical to your business continuity. Many governments have mandated the remote replication and storage of financial and certain other kinds of data. Businesses have realised that their data and applications are their absolute life blood. Make sure you know where all of your company's critical data and applications are all located and that they can be easily integrated into a remote backup solution.
2. Identify and fix single points of failure in your organisation's network, business processes, and people. In your network design, remember that redundancy eliminates single points of failure. 4. Create a comprehensive disaster recovery plan. A formal plan should be initiated and endorsed by senior management and should always involve all levels of personnel in your company. Virtual memory
Virtual memory is a computer technique which gives an application program the impression that it has real contiguous working memory (an address space), while in fact it may be physically fragmented and may even overflow on to disk storage. Systems that use this technique make programming of large applications easier and use real physical memory much more efficiently than those without virtual memory.
Virtual memory differs from memory virtualization in that virtual memory allows resources to be virtualized as memory for a specific system, as opposed to a large reserve pool of memory being virtualized as smaller pools for many different systems.
Virtual memory is more than just using disk space to extend physical memory size - that is merely the extension of the memory hierarchy to include hard disk drives. Extending memory to disk is a normal virtual memory technique, but could be done by other means such as overlays or swapping programs and their data completely out to disk while they are inactive.
Virtual memory is based on redefining the address space with a contiguous virtual memory addresses to "trick" programs into thinking they are using large blocks of contiguous addresses. All modern operating systems use virtual memory techniques for applications, such as word processors, spreadsheets, multimedia players, accounting, etc.
Older operating systems, such as DOS generally had no virtual memory functionality - notable exceptions being Apple Computer's Lisa. Embedded systems and other special-purpose computer systems which require very fast response times may choose not to use virtual memory due to decreased determinism.
In the 1950s, before the development of a virtual memory, larger programs had to contain logic for managing two-level storage (primary and secondary, today's analogies being RAM and hard disk), such as memory overlaying techniques. Programs were responsible for moving overlays back and forth from secondary storage to primary.
The main reason for introducing virtual memory was therefore to make such an extension as easy to use for programmers as possible. Many systems already had the ability to divide the memory between multiple programs, provided for example by "base and bounds registers", without providing virtual memory.
That gave each application a private address space starting at an address of 0, with an address in the private address space being checked against a register to make sure it's within the section of memory allocated and, if it is, having the contents of the corresponding base register being added to it to give an address in main memory. This is a very simple form of segmentation without virtual memory.
